Chernivtsi - a city in Ukraine, the Carpathians, on the right bank of the Prut River (on the left - a suburb Sadgora, now included in the composition of the city), the administrative center of Chernivtsi region.
The city is the historical center of Bukovina and, together with Lviv is the cultural center of western Ukraine. With Chernovtsy related activities of many figures of Ukrainian history and politics of the writer Ivan Franko to the first president Leonid Kravchuk.
History: The fortified settlement on the site of Chernivtsi, on the left bank of the Prut, supposedly was founded in the XII century by Galician prince Yaroslav Osmomysl. Fortress of the trade-craft a settlement called the Black or Chorniy city, apparently because of the black wooden walls. The ruins of the fortress remained near the modern village Lenkovtsy (now within the city limits).
