Population - 504 400 people (2008 year)
History: The city received its name in memory of the won in 1788 by Russian troops triumph - the capture of the Turkish fortress Ochakov in St. Nicholas day, patron saint of seafarers.
The first ship, a 46-gun frigate, lowered from the shipyard in 1790, was also named "St. Nicholas". After this they began construct large sailing warships in Nikolaev.
