Kharkov — is one of the biggest cities on the east of Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Kharkivska region. One of the biggest scientific, industrial, transport and student's center of Ukraine; the second after Kiev cultural center. 
History: The territory of modern Harkov has started to grow roots people in an extreme antiquity. Slavs in VIII century have created the settlement which in Х century has grown into the city Donets on a place of the future Harkov. The first mention in annals about the Donets is dated 1185. The name "Harkov" on a legend, is connected with a name of Cossack Harko (Hariton) — one of the first Ukrainian immigrants.
Population: 1,47 mln. people (2001).
